In a significant move towards expanding its augmented reality (AR) endeavors, Apple has recently completed the acquisition of Mira, a startup specializing in the production of AR headsets. The Verge reports that the deal was finalized for an undisclosed sum.
Mira was established in 2016 by entrepreneur Ben Taft and has its headquarters in Los Angeles. Over the years, the company has been actively involved in designing and manufacturing AR headsets, catering to various clients such as Universal Studios for their Nintendo World theme parks. Prior to Apple’s acquisition, Mira successfully secured investments worth $17 million from notable backers including Blue Bear Capital, Happiness Ventures, and Sequoia. These investors recognized the potential of Mira’s heads-up displays and software, which enabled the creation of engaging AR applications, games, and immersive experiences.
Initially, Mira positioned its hardware as a lightweight entry point into the world of AR, with a strong focus on consumer applications. However, the company later shifted its focus towards industrial deployments, targeting a more lucrative market segment.
The Verge highlights that Mira had previously secured military contracts, including agreements with the U.S. Air Force and Navy. It remains to be seen whether these contracts will be carried forward following Apple’s ownership. We have reached out to Mira for clarification on this matter.
This acquisition news emerges shortly after Apple unveiled its much-anticipated Vision Pro headset, the tech giant’s first foray into the realm of AR. While the extent of Mira’s involvement in Apple’s AR roadmap remains uncertain, it is worth noting that Jony Ive, the former long-standing product designer at Apple, was once an advisor to Mira, as reported by The Verge.
The incorporation of Mira’s expertise and technology into Apple’s AR ecosystem is poised to enhance the company’s capabilities in the AR hardware space. This strategic move further solidifies Apple’s commitment to developing innovative and immersive AR experiences for its users.
